Playing card games is very popular across the globe. From poker to teen Patti, India has an audience for every game. Rummy is a classic game and has been modified by different countries according to their preference while Rummy enthusiasts are mostly present in India, China, Nepal and Bhutan. In the Indian subcontinent, Rummy is predominantly played during the festive season of Dusshera and Diwali.

Indian Marriage is a variant of the classic 13 card Indian Rummy. For Indian Marriage, 3 decks of 52-cards without a joker card. Each player is dealt 21 cards and it is mandatory for the players to form at least 3 pure runs and meld the remaining cards into proper sets or sequences. This will help the player to see the joker which is a hidden card. The joker is randomly picked up from the stock pile and it determines the value of two other wild cards which are known as the ‘Value Cards’. After the player has seen the joker he may declare the game over by showing if all his cards have melded.

Melding requires at least three cards. There is no upper limit to the number of cards that can be used in melding. It is the most important part of Rummy. There are five types of melding allowed in Indian marriage rummy. They are as follows :

Pure run – 6 Diamond, 7 Diamond, 8 diamond
Pure set – 6 Diamond 6 Heart 6 Spade
Run using joker or wild card = 6 Diamond, 7 Diamond, joker/wildcard
Set using joker or wildcard = 6 Diamond, 6 Heart, joker/wildcard (6 Diamond 6 Diamond, joker/wildcard is not allowed)
All joker / wildcard can be used = 3 Joker cards or 3 wild cards

The Marriage Hand

The term Marriage Hand is used for a combination of cards that has 7♠, 8♠, 9♠. The players who have this combination get 100 points from their opponents. The game of 21 Card Rummy requires more concentration and skills as compared to 13 Card Rummy. In this game, 3 cards of the same suit and same rank form a ‘Trinala’, which is considered a pure run. The object of Marriage is to be the player with the largest number of points after playing all hands.
